Three International Supreme Winners lead the twelve N Wales Qualifiers for the World trial in Llandeilo on 11th - 14th September 2008
In the past, qualification for the World Trial has been through placings at the National Trials, but this time Wales opted for a different method; two double fetch trials being held, one each in the South and the North. Qualification for these trials was similar to the National qualification with the highest qualified sixty entries being eligible to compete in each trial.
The N Wales trial was held at Rhoslydan Farm, Bryneglwys on 15th & 16th October. Six sheep were gathered from either side, approximately 400 yds away and driven left handed. Eight sheep were shed from four collared sheep which were then penned.
The sheep were a mix of mules and Suffolk crosses. The sheep had an aversion to the fetch gates which were used for both fetches and caused problems for at least half of the competitors with; patience and accurate handling appeared to be the answer. The sheep did not appreciate a tight dog and would take advantage of any weakness.
Having completed the outwork with a tricky first outrun and a difficult draw on the turn back and second outrun, both the dogs and handlers found little problem with the drives but had their work cut out in the shedding ring and at the pen. Fifteen dogs completed the shedding with 7 being clean. Having shed, the pen was a testing element with the Suffolk crosses appearing to be more difficult than the mules. No body had a clean pen although two handlers, E Wyn Edwards with Cap and Vaughan Hughes with Black succeeded losing only one point each.
First to run on Monday as the dawn receded was Alan Ll Jones, Bala with 8 yr old Sweep 242333 (B Dalziel's Jim x H D Pritchard's Judy). Falling foul of the fetch, they finished with a completed run.(11th - 141). At no 7 was Gethin Jones, Llanarmon DC, with 9 yr old Jill 236775 (A L Jones' Lad x R S Turner's Nell) who again fell foul of the fetch gates but continued to finish (9th - 143). Hefin Jones, Dolgellau with 5 yr old Sam 258014 (W P Ll Jones' Jock x J T Davies' Fly) lost 4 pts after a tricky first outrun, A problematic shed was completed but they failed to pen.(8th - 145) Medwyn Evans, Dolgellau with 5 yr old Caddy 261110 ( M Ll Evans' Lad x J G Grant's Nell) had a good steady run with a good turn back losing 9 pts to the shed where they lost 4 pts before eventually penning after sheep persistently tying to bolt.(4th - 148)
Two runs later Wyn Edwards, Ruthin with Cap 269227 ( R Millichap's Ben x R W Jones' Mist) losing only 1 pt on the first outrun, a clean lift, fetch and 2 pts off the turn back and another 2 pts on the drive they had a clean shed and only lost 1 pt at the pen. The run was smooth and steady. (1st - 162). The sixth qualifier from the first day was Iolo Jones, Llanfihangel GM with Bill 281460 (I Ibbotson's Zac x J Harvey's Mist). They lost 6 pts on the tricky 1st outrun and on the turn back, losing 14 points up to the shed where only 3 points were lost but they ran out of time at the pen.(12th - 140)
On the second day, running at 37 was Aled Owen, Ty Nant with 4 yr old Roy 266416 (A Owen's Bob x G S Owen's Nell) who only lost 1 point to the turn back but then had problems losing another 5 points. Another 5 points were lost on the 2nd fetch as 3 sheep fought then dodged the gates, Another 3 points on the drives a clean shed and just 2 points lost at the pen.(2nd - 154). Following Aled was Cyril Humphreys, Pennal with 6 yr old Jill 254764 ( I B Jones' Nap x G Watkins' Jess) who lost 2 points each on the outrun and fetch. She like others found the turn back difficult. They lost 4 points in the ring and eventually managed to pen.(10th - 141) At no 45 in the programme was Alan Ll Jones, Bala with 5 yr old Bet 257506 (A Ll Jones' Sweep x A Ll Jones' Awel) who had a clean start but lost pts at the first fetch, 4 pts on the 2nd outrun but missed the second fetch losing 7 pts. Another clean shed and 6 pts off the pen.(5th - 148)
At 49 Gwyn Jones, Penmachno with 10 ½ yr old Deio 233560 ( M Ll Evans' Lad x A Roberts' Del) who put up a flowing run where 5 pts were lost up to a clean turn back, 2 points on the second fetch and 3 points on the drive, The shed was clean but time ran out at the pen as the Suffolk crosses proved to be task and a half.(3rd - 150)
Arwel Staples, Bala with 6 yr old Pandy Spot 250076 ( T E Howell's Ben x M McNaught's Dolwen Lyn) ran at no 55 losing 3pts on the first outrun and 2 each on the fetches, 3 pts on the shed but after problems at the pen the time went just as Arwel had almost closed the gate.(7th - 146)
The last to qualify was Vaughan Hughes, Rhosmeirch with 5 yr old Black 261128 (R V Hughes, Eryri Roi x R V Hughes' Juno), knocking Eryl P Roberts, Padog with Bet 257668 (H I Puw's Sbec x H I Puw's Nan) into reserve position. Problems on the first outrun cost them 4 pts with another 3 on the fetch, a good turn back left them with 9 pts lost until the sheep yet again dodged the fetch gates. An almost clean finish, just losing one on the pen. 6th - 147pts.
The trial proved to be a good test of both dog and handler with a good qualifying result to join the S Wales qualifiers to represent Wales at the World Trial.
